About Dogs Across Australia
Dogs Across Australia links to and assists some thirty ‘No Kill’ dog rescue shelters operating in Australia.
These shelters, their volunteers and foster carers, rescue dogs across Australia, mainly from death row in council pounds. Many council pounds are eager to see the dogs rehomed. Nevertheless, in Australia, about 200,000 healthy, viable dogs are killed each year.
In most council-run pounds, dogs are killed after between seven to fourteen days if they haven’t been claimed by their owners.
There are many reasons why dogs end up in pounds. The ready availability of dogs as consumer items and the giving of dogs as unwanted presents, result in pet dogs being regarded as disposable. Dogs are family members, not disposable toys and how we treat them reflects our values as a society.
Are these our real values? Death Row Pets We ask that you sign this petition: Animals (Regulation of Sales) Bill 2007 which is listed on the DEATH ROW PETS website or visit LEAD the WAY
Help the Rescue Groups
Rescue shelters provide housing, food and veterinary care, until such time as the dogs are re-homed. The rescue shelters receive no government hand-outs and are reliant on the generosity of the Australian community.
Dogs Across Australia is helping some of the rescue shelters by raising public awareness to their problems, and by assisting with fundraising.
Dogs can also be adopted directly from the Dog Rescue Shelters listed with us. Please consider this option, for every time a dog is re-homed, room is made for another dog from death row. Note: Shelter opening hours vary, details are on their websites.
Pound information can found by clicking the Dog Pounds link on the right. These impounded dogs are on Death Row. Contact the pounds directly during their advertised business hours if you wish to adopt them.
Have you considered helping the rescue shelters by becoming a FOSTER CARER? Please contact the shelters listed on this site, as most need foster carers and transport people URGENTLY.
Overpopulation is not the dogs fault. It is up to us to solve the problem by means other than the outdated practice of destroying so many sentient animals.

The Pound Dog
Please ask your children or students to read the Pound Dog story in our EDUCATING section, so the next time they discuss buying a dog on impulse they may be reminded of the unfortunate little Pound Dog.
Perhaps you might consider adopting your next companion dog from one of the Rescue Shelters listed on this website. These lovely dogs are desexed, inoculated, wormed and heartworm tested. The shelter staff will take the time to help you select the right companion. Many of these shelters offer their dogs on a 'trial' basis. Details are on their sites.
Doggie Rule #1. One of the most important words in "doggie" language is DESEX. By putting this simple rule into action, the pounds across Australia may soon stop filling up.
Kids! You can colour in the Pound Dog and 'Freedom' then stick them on your fridge. Ask if you can display them at your school too.The Surfer Dog is showing what a great time little Aussie dogs can have - if only someone like you will help them!
And...don't forget - 25 June is Pound Dog Day. Download and print the stickers; hand them out to your friends and family members to wear on the day.
