Pound Dog Day is an initiative of Dogs Across Australia and was created to draw attention to the appalling ‘Kill’ culture that exists in Australian society. It is estimated that up to 200 000 healthy dogs are killed each year in council pounds.
.
Many dog lovers are concerned that unregulated back-yard breeding, impulse buying, and the lack of mandatory de-sexing laws creates a situation where dogs are easily bought, bred and buried.
.
The ‘No Kill’ Rescue Shelters go to great lengths to find suitable homes for their shelter dogs. They carefully vet prospective owners, and should offer only DE-SEXED, vaccinated, wormed and microchipped dogs for re-homing. In the event their sensible approach ever be broadly adopted, there would be far fewer unwanted and neglected dogs.

On June 25, we also say ‘THANK YOU’ to all the Rescue Angels who make the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of so many Pound Dogs possible.
